Our first entry in a our new series of profiles on the Manoomin project’s researchers is second-year MS student Alex Waheed. Alex is studying the effects of geochemistry and hydrology on the growth of mannomin (wild rice) in Minneosta and Wisconsin, as part of our collaborative and tribally-driven project between the University of Minnesota and our Tribal partners within located within the Great Lakes Region. Alex grew in Chicago, Illinois, and completed his undergraduate degree in geology at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Following his graduation from Whitman, Alex spent a year working overseas in Malaysia before beginning his MS program at the University. Four of Alex’s favorite things are running, listening to podcasts, summertime, and cooking Pakistani food.
